Running Backwards to Avoid the Tag

Question?

Bill Aslin from Crowley, TX asks:

Runner on first with one out. The batter hits a ground ball to the 2nd baseman and the runner on 1st runs toward 2nd, but seeing that the 2nd baseman is going to tag him, the runner runs back to 1st. The 2nd baseman throws the ball to 1st and beats the batter to the bag so that the batter is out. However, the runner who was on first is not tagged by the 1st baseman or 2nd basemen. Is the runner safe?

This runner is safe! Since the 2nd baseman didn't tag his base to force out the runner from first and the 1st baseman failed to tag the runner from first after retiring the batter, the runner from first can take first back safely.
